I don't speak any Japanese, but I was able to communicate with another passenger through the medium of CPR. We took turns and worked on the guy in front of his family and the rest of the carriage. They were utterly distraught and we did our best to hold on to him. #HeartMonth

We used a defibrillator (in Japanese, and the Japanese woman tapped me when we needed to be clear). We kept going for 25 minutes, between the seats, until the train was able to make a stop and allow paramedics on board. By then, it was becoming obvious that we'd lost him. 🥺 #HeartMonth

We handed him over to the paramedics and the family disembarked. The train continued, and I sat there wondering what the hell had just happened.

I was surrounded by non-English speakers and so couldn't speak to anyone about the event. #HeartMonth

I was upset that we'd failed to save him, but I was essentially feeling very raw and was evidently in shock. With a bit of post-trauma support, I was able to recognise that we'd given him a better chance of survival. We improved his odds, compared to doing nothing. #HeartMonth

Remember, all of this happened with no common language, other than that of CPR.

I'd absolutely jump up again to help a other human if the situation arose, irrespective of language barriers or cultural differences.
