Top Gun: Maverick had no business being as good as it was. Especially with that much fan service packed in.

It also had an EXTREMELY different tone, which seems like it shouldn’t work, but it did. Really well.

Unpopular opinion. I actually prefer Top Gun Maverick to Top Gun. Its one of the few movies thats not Star Trek or sci fi I can watch quite a few times. Its up there with Truman Show as a non sci fi movie Ive watched about 5 or 6 times.

Exactly. That‘s what fascinates me everytime. It shouldn‘t work but does. So many late sequels I criticize for being hollow and just living off their glorious and better past. But this somehow defied all odds

I think the focus on Maverick’s continuing guilt and trauma is what connects it best to the original, and makes it feel like it belongs. But idk if they did this on…

It’s about making it up to people he wronged due to his own BS, and him owning his BS helps him find peace, belonging, and family for the first time since his dad died.

Yeah I very much liked seeing him grown into being accountable for his actions. Also yeah he got to play hero again and you‘ll never really shake his recklessness, but he also learned to let the next generation have a go and to trust in them. I liked that.
