Idk, any #libraryschools or #ischools out there want someone to teach clinical reference, health education, and evidence synthesis methods? I sure as shit didn’t learn any of this in library school.

I owe so much of what I know and do today to my internship, work as a grad student, and self-education. I *did* have one class that was 1/2 of a quarter long that focused on consumer health but that was it as far as formal Ed.

Can you imagine us tag teaming searching (basic reference, clinical bedside, ES, etc)? 😂 We could be role play based on experiences, too. Also crash course in the hierarchy of medical personnel (real versus perceived) and how to determine level based on lab coat length.

I never learned to search in library school. I didn't know what Dialog was nor any of the databases! Learned every darn thing on the job by trial and error, watching colleagues, asking tons of questions and attending loads of trainings. I'm learning every day from my current and former colleagues!

At UM, small groups of SI students made presentations in class on how individual databases work but never learned how to use them - not even 1 - as I learned when I tried to use them to create Canvas modules. A pointless exercise.

Indeed! I only had 1 session (1hr?) on searching databases via Dialog and then in the early 90s, it was via FTP and gopher. Why do library schools use Dialog? Another thing is we were never taught teaching skills and what did I do a lot of in one of my jobs? Teaching people how to search. Hmm...
