Canada had 6.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people in 1984, but just 2.5 per 1,000 people by 2018. Both Conservative and Liberal governments contributed to this decline, so finger-pointing not useful. We need to reinvest in hospital surge capacity via more staffed beds.

Tricky information because it’s a provincial responsibility and liberal in prov politics can mean conservative.

Home care options are poorly funded these days, so it is worse than people realize.

I hasten to add... a lot of relief could be had if we also invest in proper community and home care, so we can offload many elderly who are essentially stored in hospital beds until they find a place to receive long term care.

as someone who has just spent many days in emergency advocating for my 98-year-old mother and many, many hours making arrangements so that her retirement home would accept her back as a palliative care patient, I find the term offload sounds heartless, though I know that was not your intent

There are models that work…I know of an incredible infectious disease clinic in Ontario that has as its raison d’être keeping people OUT of hospital, and it works. But there’s no scaling…everything seems local and one-off
