I never got the flu shot & believed my good health was enough to guard me from severe illness. Then I got the flu and was so ill with breathing difficulties and secondary infections lasting months. Since then I never miss a shot. Unvaccinated friends become severely ill & I get over it within days.

8 yrs ago, in my early 50s, I forgot to get the flu vax in the autumn because work was so busy. After the new year, I got the flu which rapidly turned into pneumonia, and I have never been so sick -- in bed for 2 months which I can barely remember. I will never willingly miss another flu shot.

I would also recommend to anyone in the US, before vaccines become unavailable, to get the one-and-done pneumonia shot now, while you can. After my flu/pneumonia experience, I got pneumonia vax in Feb 2020 as more were starting to talk about covid, because one dr mentioned flu → pneumonia → covid.

I got mine earlier this year. Hubby almost died from pneumonia 10 years ago and his doc made him get it then, he'll need to get it in another 10 years when he's old like me.

No. In the 2020-21 season there were almost no deaths from influenza and we even wiped out an entire strain of the virus because we were distancing, masking and cleaning the air. Death rates started creeping back up in 21-22 and have now returned to pre-covid norms, which always fluctuated a lot.
