It's where we are, folks.

For an autocrat to come to power, their propaganda can't just be lies, it must also contain a contempt for facts. This will ultimately lead to a post truth era where expertise is shunned and uninformed opinion is sanctified. We are here now.

I've always differentiated between ignorance and willful ignorance. The former simply means you don't know, but can be persuaded by, the evidence. The latter means you deliberately deny any and all evidence. This is where intractable incorrect beliefs refuse to die.

Also - not confined only to the right. The treatment of one's "feelings" as evidence of truth (over actual factual evidence) is wildly rampant across the political spectrum.

It’s where we’ve been since I was about two, probably longer. Doctors never knew anything, teachers never knew anything, my opinions are at least of equal value to scholarly research. That’s all I’ve ever seen here.

I was at a bonfire party years ago and a drunk lady started going off about how all doctors are crooks. Then I told her I had many doctors in my family. She replied, "So you know how crooked they are!".
No...they're just regular people trying to do the job they paid big money to learn. She left.

The culture of the USA has never been pro-intelligence. In fact, I learned as a child that the more ridiculous a claim is, the truer it must be. It’s hell growing up here if your IQ is over two digits.

It's true. In 2020, all my remaining conservative friends kept telling me I was wrong when I was conveying covid death numbers because "everything on the news is a lie" or "quit trolling me". It's painful.

For me it ceased being painful decades ago. I realized what everyone said and what everyone did were two entirely different things. Because “Schoolhouse Rock” said it doesn’t make it reality.
