This will be the biggest story locally in 2025. Yesterday was meant to be full-tilt overload but local media will need to center it quickly. The potential loss of hundreds of millions in federal funds affects every local priority.

I'm trying really hard not to be scared about everything rn (mostly failing), but this sounds like it would impact federal transportation funding too, right?
I wonder who has standing for a lawsuit over this. Any taxpayer? We pay federal taxes with the understanding that the federal government will use that money for our welfare.
Interesting question, I hope #LawSky has an answer (if that's a thing?)
Showing particularized injury and path to redress would be easy, IMO -- the difficulty comes in proving that the decision is "arbitrary and capricious". Could be tough, since they're ostensibly promoting the fed's interests
I just feel like we've thrown tea in a harbor over shit like this before, you know? One might say it's a founding principle of the country. What good is "representation" if a president-king can withhold the benefit of your duly paid taxes?
I get that, but they're definitely related. If withholding federal funds gets cities to cooperate on deportation that fills the camps. We should work against the camps, but if someone is willing and able to attack on this front as well it ties up enforcement in the courts. And someone who isn't+
There's another carve-out for "otherwise against the law" which is a sliver of hope, but IDK what kind of law could possibly be violated here. I guess maybe Equal Representation from the 14th amendment?
Obv this all changes completely if we regain control of both houses of congress in 2026.
I don't particularly want to wait that long before challenging this bullshit, but since I am no longer a resident of a sanctuary city (or the US) I definitely don't have standing.
I don’t know. Not a lawyer. But the constitutionality of impoundment will be tested, assuming that the existing appropriation is in law. On balance though a GOP Congress has 4 years to defund legally. Hope Canadians fare better even though you’re in the gunsights too.
Yeah, I'm more worried about those I've left behind... Canada is at least its own country and can strengthen ties elsewhere. I feel like this is one is a opportunity for some liberal millionaires who live in sanctuary cities to start suing and tie things up, but it requires sticking your neck out.
2 years before the balance of control is up for a vote again in congress...
Last time around it took them 2 years to not repeal the ACA and agree on the tax cuts that promised gpd growth, which never materialized. So here is hoping they can do what they do best, ensure nothing happens.
I hope that the GOP can spend all their time fighting over who and how many to sacrifice to their god (beyond the school children from the regular mass shootings) and forget to actually legislate, and honestly it seems like a plausible outcome at this point.
Chicago city council just voted against a law that would essentially walk back their sanctuary city status by a factor of over 3 to 1. I'm curious which city council member / fancy lad here will be the first to suggest such a law and if our city will weather the consent manufacturing when they do.
You are more optimistic than I am in this case, David! It depends, in my opinion, what satisfies these guys' egos and if they think their bases are going mask off or not. I genuinely hope you're right.
But maybe I'm just a seething mad transexual line cook lol
I don’t think any current Minneapolis pol really has a taste for going back on sanctuary status (again, except maybe Rainville) but there will be tremendous force applied. Given the latest property tax freak out (which is just a ripple compared to this), I’m not optimistic they can, well, resist.
Truly hope you're right about their campaigning. But like I said, either way, now is the time to get organizing if one hasn't been doing that already. We need to mobilize a lot more fuckin people.
And we gotta be ready to get folks who don't usually speak out against All of Mpls mobilized to do so. If it is just all of us guys who already do that, it's easier for them to dismiss us or pretend that we are naive or something. We need cool mom block.
I don’t want to be anyone’s sweet summer child but I don’t think they could get elected espousing an end to sanctuary status. I don’t put it past any of those folks to cave easily, however.
Metro areas still have journalists (i.e. non profit Block Club Chicago)who will report, but the lower population dense areas of the US are not getting the truth.

AFAICT this would be the relevant standard:

In the end the calculus is always simple when coming up against tyranny: am I willing to risk my life over this? The tea was just a symbolic start...

I feel ready to organize either way.
