It's difficult, isn't it. My generation was brought up in fear & blame when it came to HIV/Aids. I remember the red tops blaming bisexual folk for "transmitting to straights." It was a death sentence. I appreciate that we've come so far, but there's still learned behaviour from our formative years

Absolutely. I vividly remember, as a kid, believing that once you got the virus, that was it. And things have changed so much - it's just by sharing information that we can try and change that view that it's a death sentence.

Like, we've come so so far in that regard, and we just have to keep on!

Absolutely agree. We need to break that stigma. We can honour those we lost, but in the same breath, celebrate we don't have to lose anyone else.

But old habits die hard. Even though the medication is now available to suppress the virus. You’ll still have people fearing they can catch the virus & develop HIV and eventually AIDS.

When I was in college 30 years ago, my mom freaked when I told her I was doing HIV/AIDS outreach, because there was so much misinformation and bigotry. If Ronald “Ketchup is a vegetable” Reagan hadn’t dismissed it as “a gay problem,” So many millions would still be alive.

My only critique here is that taking Prep vastly reduces your chance of catching HIV. But, much like condoms efficacy, doesn’t remove the chance of it happening at all. The point though is solid - with current medical knowledge you’ll die from diabetes before you die from HIV. Stigma needs to stop.

There have been some remarkable medical advancements to combat HIV/AIDS. Now we just need the societal advancements to catch up. (Ie leaving the shame and stigma behind)
