It should always come down to policies. If a Labour MP doesn't understand that permanent industrial growth is not sustainable on a finite planet, then they shouldn't be joining the Green Party. If they agree to all of what the party stands for then they should be welcome.

OK so suppose an MP defects successfully. They get treated like any other new member as far as I'm concerned. To run as MP there's a rule about how many years you have had continuous membership. If you haven't you have to jump through more hoops, to a certain extent case-by-case.

Then there's the first-past-the-post system. The party is looking at the same time at where to target resources, which constituencies we can win.
Suppose you want to go for a winnable constituency: you'd want to select early. These constituencies have started hiring and campaigning.

Once selection takes place it's obviously a rigorous process for a constituency, like applying for a job. There are national guidance rules for any constituency: there must be women on the short list. For Bristol there must be global majority representation.
Then under guidance there is a vote.

This is what I was wondering about. After working hard to become an MP someone might be loathe to risk going back to square one in a selection process (no matter how fair it is). This diminishes the appeal for some in Labour to defect to the Greens (or LibDems for that matter).

In essence the time for @greenparty.org.uk to recruit disaffected Labour MP’s is now so they have 2-3 years in office before going through selection.

Surely there's never been a better time for disgruntled (ex-) Labour MPs to cross the floor. The idea of "stay and fight" has long been discredited, and on paper an ecosocialist alliance would be the fourth largest group of MPs (if not third!)
