So many people my age are like “when I was a kid, teachers kept their private lives to themselves, we didn’t know if any of them were gay” and don’t make the connection between that and the fact that their teachers could’ve been fired for being openly gay at the time.

My 90s teenage friend groups was unusually progressive and accepting for the era and even so everyone in that group who came out did so after they left for uni to avoid the small town homophobia that was rampant.

I joined the Air Cadets in high school in the 90s. Didn’t particularly leave me wanting to join the military, but then that wasn’t really up to me, cause guess which groups were banned from enlisting. (Hint. It wasn’t just the T+ who weren’t allowed in that particular club.)

I was another Section 28 kid, and when I was about 12 there was a moral panic among the students because a new teacher was rumoured to be "gay", and people were worried that this meant he was going to come into the school changing rooms to sexually harass children.

It was an all girls school.

I have no idea if this (cis male as far as I know) teacher WAS gay, or where this rumour came from- but as an unhappily closeted kid at the time, this seemed emblematic of how 'gay' people were assumed to all be sexual predators who can't be allowed near children.

Had very similar experiences until 2010. Refused promotion 6 times because of my sexuality. Interview feedback was completely open about it. And it was legal.
