Kennard attempted to enroll in Mississippi Southern College (now Southern Mississippi University) in 1956, 1957, and 1959. He was a Korean War veteran and devout Baptist.

Kennard essentially tried to desegregate Southern Miss *by himself* at a point when even the NAACP wouldn’t touch the school because it was simply too dangerous. McCain conspired to have Kennard arrested and sent to work on the notorious Parchman Prison cotton plantation.
Kennard was already very sick at the time, and died a horrific death as a result of what Devery Anderson calls “a slow, calculated lynching.” Even if you don’t listen to the episode, we should all know Kennard’s story.
