I support a new HE collider to learn more about the EW sector but saying that an ee machine will tell us anything about the flavor puzzle or neutrinos seems like a stretch to me. Its not clear why studying the Higgs, which seems to be well understood, is "the most urgent problem in particle physics"
The shape near the minimum needs to be a quadratic. Probably the first deviation from that is also fixed by the need for the Higgs potential to be part of a renormalizable Lagrangian. Can measurements of the shape really tell us much?
If you go beyond the minimal SM, there can be substantial deviations from the SM expectations. Already a second Higgs doublet opens opportunities. There's the question, if the other resonances would be found before the coupling measurement is precise enough to claim BSM evidence, of course.
Isn’t that in most QFT books? The Higgs is responsible for CKM as well as diagonal Higgs couplings in SM so only by measuring all of them can we even establish the “flavor puzzle” or know it’s an even bigger puzzle? Same goes for neutrinos but obviously harder to measure and more ambiguous 🎯
My point was that we have measured the CKM matrix before we discovered the Higgs boson, so it isn't obvious to me how more measurements of the Higgs boson addresses the flavor puzzle or neutrino masses. I'm referring to the motivation used in the above article for a Higgs factory
I just mean that the CKM matrix isn’t independent of the Higgs couplings so only by measuring them do we even know what the puzzle is or if there are new ingredients. We could find the same thing about neutrinos but it’s more ambiguous bc there are multiple options, some of which colliders address.
