One unmissable manifestation of the underfunding is the crumbling infrastructure around campus, the result of deferred maintenance b/c no $. It's not a great experience for students either. The cafeteria closed since covid, leaving food trucks, and no place to socialize on a commuter campus. 2/

Because Admin is worried about $, they pressure depts to cancel classes who don't have enrollments about 15. That leads to late cancellations, sometimes a week or 2 before the semester, messing up people's work schedule since our students work 20-40 hrs a week in pricey NYC. 3/

I've had a class cancelled 2 weeks from the semester's start. Either I owe them a class in the next few years or I teach another class in a different modality, what I did. At least it was a class I taught online before. Many colleagues have had their classes canceled more than mine. 4/

My dept lost 6 TT faculty who left for various reasons. None replaced despite years of my dept showing demand for classes & our dept's ability to hire diverse faculty. There is no $ for replacement TT hires. Class offerings have shrank for our majors. Faculty do more service. Bad actors bail out. 4/

Yes, I'm lucky to have tenured position, many don't. And instead of me inspiring my students, *they* often inspire me with the conditions they work under juggling so much to get their degree. Thanks, people who support us. NO thanks to the state & city who continue their neglect. FIN/

Four of my closest friends at Brooklyn College left in the last 7 years. I can't blame them. They went to institutions where they had a more humane work environment. NYC is super expensive. They miss our students, but not the CUNY perpetual austerity and resource starvation.
