In the 19th century, slave states banned foreign & domestic free Black sailors claiming they were "moral contagions" spreading dangerous ideas of freedom to the enslaved population. Same states also banned US mail from the N for same reason. My article abt the rationale. cc @paulgowder.bsky.social
