As an adjunct, I teach bc I love it, I’m good at it and I don’t want to do anything else. I accepted the low pay, the unstable schedule, no retirement, etc. It hurts to have taught at the same school for 7 years and know that any quarter- my dream job might end and never return.

It’s working the other direction too. Fewer applicants for prof jobs each year. The Faculty Appointments Register for law prof candidates has been steadily shrinking.

The fallacious generalization in that subheading: "some don't see a future..." It's almost as if CHE (for shame!) is ventrioquizing a fantasy of "no future in academia." Who does that benefit? there are other ways to articulate problems(68% contingent jobs in unis, falling wages,etc). This ain't it.

There would be so many structural reforms that have to happen simultaneously and only the wealthiest institutions having the money to do it, that I am at a loss. Even at richer unis, it's a matter of political will.

Stronger protections for contingent faculty. At CUNY our union has successfully pushed for more three year lines and pay raises for adjunct faculty, giving people more economic and job security. It's not perfect, but it's a start.

My modest experience is that the challenges facing academia are appealing to the types of people who are drawn to ... challenges. As a colleague quipped: we've become a profession of watchmakers.

Those of us who still do it, do it because it needs to be done and that is a kind of reward.
