My daughter was also in special Ed for speech beginning in 2nd grade. Now she has a PhD. in special education and is a professor at a university teaching and researching Applied Behavior Analysis.

Thank you for sharing. I run an NPA that provides Physical Therapy for Special Education students. Our goal is to help students function and be safe in school environments. I’m worried we might not get funding for the next school year. I’m saddened for all the students who will be affected by this.

It was the teachers & speech pathologist that said, no way is he autistic, he has a speech disorder. This disorder also affects language arts. Reading, writing & spelling. He finally started speaking at the age of 4. He stay in inclusion classrooms until 5th grade. When moved to a little smaller (2)

school district in the same town.Smaller class sizes. 5th grade, they had an open book test. He really had no clue how to use a textbook, but he could read. (I need to go back a little. When my son was 3, I gave up my career, drove a school bus for 2 yrs, then worked as a Para for kids w/autism).(3)

(I then started as a para. This way I had same hours as my son did, days off & summers off. My now ex worked 3-11 & had zero patience). So I started out with his homework, showing him the answer is in this sentence, this page, etc etc). He loved sports, so I bought a subscription to sports (4)

Illustrated. He read all of them from cover to cover. He also had an IEP in grade, middle, HS & collage. I made sure since he had issues with spelling because he did not hear words phonetically, that he was never graded on spelling on reports & tests, only content. My son is 6' 8". So yep started(5)

Him in basketball at age of 5. All the coaches he ever had, especially when he was younger & had some language issues, they were wonderful. In HS, he took all regular classes. Had a special study hall with a spec Ed teacher. He could take longer on tests if needed & no marks for spelling errors (6)

Also in his IEP, was the issues of not bring able to take a foreign language in case the collage he went to had this stipulation. Middle school & high school played basketball. Off season played on select teams that traveled the US for tournaments. He had a basketball scholarship in college. (7)
