After announcing he was gay in 1945, he separated from his wife, the painter Virginia Admiral, whom he’d met in P-town (!) while both were studying w/ Hans Hoffman. So this photo was taken when he was out (at least to his wife and close circle) and in a relationship with modernist poet R.E. Duncan.
