The revolution had global resonance: I remember that my father disagreed with my mother over it. In Belgrade! They had no dog in the fight. But it was big.

Reagan's revolution was also big. He upended things. Pushed back against the USSR that foolishly invaded Afghanistan the year before & not only went into a war it could not win, but challenged the basis of the Cold War order. Reagan was a Cold Warrior who wished for peace.

The third was Solidarnosc & Walesa. They not only came suddenly from nowhere but created a 10-milkon strong workers' movement in opposition to a (seeming) workers' state. It reshuffled all ideological stereotypes. It was impossible to classify as left or right.

The fourth was Gorbachev's. At first, I was extraordinarily enthusiastic. But the more I saw that it is bound to lead to wars, the more my enthusiasm cooled down. My mother who had a great political acumen said to me gloomily on the night of the German unification: this is the end of Yugoslavia.

Gorbachev caused wars by not using Russia's military to prop up dictatorships? German reunification is what made Slobo such a bad leader? You are making connections where none exist.

(China, despite dramatic changes in policy, never had such a clean-cut break as the others. Indira's state of emergency was just a flash in a pan, although at first it seemed serious.)

Don't you think that Deng could be included in the list? True he has made gradual reforms, but, it seems to me, so radical ones that they look like the kind of reforms Kautsky (or Italian Communists) dream of in order to transition to socialism w/out violence-in the opposite direction!
