I was living in a small moutain town in Eastern Oregon when they got the grant to redo all their curbs and sidewalks and stuff.

A small army of contractors decended into town that summer. And the transformation was amazing.

Because somebody cared enough to make change for the disabled...

Common misconception online because a lot of the most online people collecting disability benefits are on SSI rather than SSDI. SSDI imposes no limits on marital status, household income, or resources. SSI does.

patient conversations can be a wonderful way to resolve tension in your own personal friend group and family, maybe even at your job, but in terms of 'actually getting your rights', it does not mean shit. it does not scale, and it makes it all too easy to ignore your issues for years, decades.

this exactlyyyy. it's too easy for ableist politicians to blow off disabled people, so it unfortunately is best to SHOW them what they are doing to us, even if it's painful and dangerous. they think we're faking it until we hurt ourselves demonstrating that we are not. :(

like the 60s civil rights movement before the disability rights movement, *conflict* actually powered much of getting rights. making normal day to day life unworkable if their demands were not met. sidewalk smashing was not patient conversation and neither was bus boycotts.

you cannot get rights by slowrolling the issue and trying to retreat into a 'safe' zone. it is uncomfortable, yes, it is frightening, but rights changes are made with, at minimum, openly forcing the conflict into where people can no longer ignore it.

there was a big ol' chunk of wealthy gay money that was going in for gay marriage that disappeared from queer rights groups the moment SCOTUS ruled in our favor. they had a lot of interest in getting gay marriage, and pretty much no interest in any queer rights after that.
