Sometimes I wonder if our culture's fascination with apocalyptic and post apocalyptic novels and movies, is a product of our collective unconscious trying to tell us to prepare for something.

I think partly, yes, humanity's death wish, and partly it's a cycle. Artists in the '60s-'70s reacted to the invention of the ICBM, and the anhelation they imply, by writing about the effects: then, artists growing up in the '70s-'80s reacted to that art, inspired to create similar works . . .
TL;DR: Disasters happen all the time. Regional collapses happen all the time. I lived through a few in my life. Be prepared. The grid is more fragile than society would have you believe.
It would be hard to prep against microplastics since they're in the water and air and probably in the plastic bottles a prepper has and so on. And in the dried food packets etc etc etc
