IDK if it’s chemical or merely culture-bound but make of this what you will: my trans son, back before we knew he wasn’t a girl, had the fidgeting, leg-bouncing expressions of the condition that I never displayed as a stare-out-the-window-and-daydream girl of the same age.

That rings a bell. Kids' H.S. was module system too. That may have been masking for them too.
