the last time the guy running on hope for better lost was John Kerry, and he went to considerable effort to reduce his offering to "no really I'll just do bush's war more efficiently."

Might be some historical social matrix defining the voter base that your entire approach to politics requires you to ignore that makes these people’s campaign choices seem as simple as “forfeiting hope”. The last time hope worked we had to make sure “Cousin Pookey” was put in his place.
