Jasper Fforde's Shades of Grey (the first book, which I think is being called The Road to High Saffron)? And Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. Fforde is funnier, though Atwood gets in some unexpected humour too. And as things go on, Fforde is no less horrifying.

I’ve read Handmaid’s Tale, and I’ve read other stuff by Fforde, but not Shades of Grey — would not have expected to hear those authors paired. Color me intrigued!

There's a sequel to the Fforde book that was released last year (Red Side Story), though I think the first one hits harder. It takes awhile to get into, but it's worth it.

I loved The Bright Sword, I'll need to check out Service Model next!

I recommend The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard and In Ascension by Martin MacInne. Two character-driven speculative fiction novels centered on a female MC, and both play with time in interesting ways.
