This matches up with my own experiences working with kids. It's less that they can't read and more that A) they don't want to and B) their reading comprehension is lower.
I feel like the solution really is showing kids that reading is fun again rather than just work.

I have a 10+yr history of learning about the variety of books for young kids. Every day I worked with kids, I read them a favorite of mine. My early childhood library included all genres.
But yeah, I've learned working in childcare 5 years that a lot of adults just don't want to put the work in with kids.
There's a lot of stuff that was in my school library that I know we'd be heavily discouraged from reading with kids now.
I was sure it was BS. How many adults do you know that can't text?
The former is fine. The latter has been slipping.
But a lot of guidelines these days are "nothing bad happens."
We need to make reading fun again.
