Usually that leverage comes from the opponent's momentum, though, doesn't it? Isn't that usually how jiu jitsu works? You need momentum to make stuff happened?
Not necessarily! Unlike Judo or Akido which use an opponent's force against them, BJJ tends to use body mechanics and weight distribution to control the opponent. For example the classic armbar works by using the practitioner's full strength and weight to hyperextend just an opponent's elbow joint.
You’re not entirely wrong. What you described is basically how takedowns work. You get them moving then add to/redirect their momentum. That goes for bjj, judo, and wrestling. Submissions rely on body mechanics and leverage. Using momentum for those is how you injure your training friends.
No that's what the plot accomplishes, the plot sets up the reason, stakes, and order of events. You wouldn't say the plot of John Wick is man shoots people it's man shoots people as revenge for his dog.

She might have to take a leaf out of some Luchadores' book to build up momentum.
