FFS, time to find something besides Proton VPN.

What I recommend immediately no matter what is https://nextdns.io - its DNS security is second to none and its crazy affordable and is easy to install on phones when you're off home networks.

Proton the product seems okay, but the guy in charge suuuuuuuuuucks. I’ve been happy with IVPN for many years. They’re not the Wirecutter pick anymore mostly bc of price, I think.

Heavily considering DuckDuckGo currently or Mullvad (which is supposedly who Mozilla uses behind the scenes) advantage of Mullvad is that they’re based in Sweden but it seems like it’s for a more tech savvy user.

DuckDuckGo seems less sophisticated and more user friendly, but based in the US.

Mullvad is who Mozilla uses, they are based in Sweden, and they’re an industry leader for third party audits and eschewing logs. US cos have stricter laws they’re meant to follow re data because of the patriot act, highly recommend avoiding.

I see a US-based VPN as being just another ISP from a practical standpoint. It’s an extremely imperfect comparison, but with enough options outside the borders it’s good enough for me.
