I get that everyone finds their priors confirmed, but look: Trump got 4% more than 2016, 3% than 2020. He did it despite being -8.6% favorability. Results in blue states and among minorities swung heavily in his favor. I'd be a huge risk if Democrats chalk this up to transient, fickle circumstances.

Agree on the whole. And I have to say that this denunciation of the academic left, like some others I've read, doesn't seem to have much to do with the circles of the academic left I live in; it's highly (and in my view distortingly) selective.

But that said, strategy without affect will fail every time and create the effect of a mandate. The sensation of a “verdict,” especially in fascist times. A terrible strategy is one inattentive to affect, feeling and mood. It’s like managing baseball on analytics alone.
