call me insane but I'm so fairly certain that the new outfit on mogstation is based off of traditional Korean aesthetics so the way they've labeled the pieces as Japanese is seriously rubbing me the wrong way

The way I got so excited when I saw the outfit but then instantly felt like I got sucker punched by the description. As a Korean-American ffxiv fan, I hate the fact that I'm used to this feeling
im not sure about the hanbok thing. there are several other outfits based off of hanbok that are just labeled "far eastern" (which is fine). i do recall them adding taisho roman era clothing into the game which many korean players spoke up about at the time. they're still in the game though 🤷♂️
Also like... why are the pieces named Japanese like I GUESS I can stretch it to "People don't know what they are in Korean" but this is the time to learn!!!
atp im just chalking it up to the translation teams messing up.. the outfit is genuinely really beautiful, all of the outfits are. this just activated the part of my brain that is radically korean asdjgkl 😭
I was so excited for the outfit because 풍물놀이 is genuinely one of my favorite things if not the favorite thing about Korean culture/traditions so seeing it just be referred to Hingan is making me want to throw hands
Probably a result of whoever was in charge of writing the English blurb on the store as viewing Hingashi as just be representative of “East Asia” in general since FFXIV lands aren’t exact one-to-one analogues to real world places (like Garlemald being primarily a mixture of Russian and Roman-
YEA.. FR.. i went oh?? and got really excited when i first caught a glimpse of it this morning. completely mind boggled that this made its way into the game and then reading the description made my brain go completely into question marks 😭😭 had me questioning if this was based off of 풍물놀이 or not
You know it exactly. The costume is based on the motif of Korean traditional costume. I knew it was released on MogStation, but why did they mark it like that? I feel bad. It was given to Korea first as compensation for the slow patch. (I used a translator.)
WAOUGH YEA........... going thru doma for me was not pleasant 💀 folks have also brought up that japan Also invaded china so the fact that yanxia is completely based off of china but everyone in it had japanese names and were japanese also kinda Sucks Ass
I'm Chinese diaspora and I had people gaslighting me saying no, Yanxia is based off China and I'm like...only outwardly in some aesthetics? Do they not see the implications that every NPC is named after a Japanese name, they all wear kimono or yukata, and "doman traditions" are in fact Japanese ones
yea I'd like to know if this was something the english mogstation team fucked up dearly on or if the korean or japanese sites have em labeled differently..
i’d take this with a grain of salt because i’m not fluent in any lang below but french german and japanese online stores have no mention of hingashi. i tried especially looking for ひんがしの国/ひんがしの in japanese assuming those would be used to refer to hingan but only saw 東 referring to 東方の for far east
it is labeled as the "korean pre-launch costume! far eastern wandering entertainer's set" (한국 선행 출시 의상! 동방 방랑예인 의상 세트). unfortunately the crystal shop does not list the names of the individual pieces.
but even on the korean shop, absolutely 0 mention of hingashi. just "far eastern." without having access to the kr version of the game (tho i am working on that) i can't confirm the individual item names but i can't imagine they'd use anything other than the original kr words for these pieces???
I dug around and while the kr shop doesn't have the pieces listed, I found the artwork they showed at kr fanfest to reveal the outfit. The artwork labels the pieces as such:
Using google translate
It seems to be an english issue and should be pointed out in forum because that is pretty bad.
I still don't like it being called "Far eastern" but i rather that than the other
looking as well and, anyone is free to correct me if I'm wrong, but it could be a case where the JP site is calling them by their respective terms in Japanese but instead of the translation teams translating them, they've decided to just.. Straight Up take the terms 🤷♂️ who knows!!
I think is just bad reviewing of translation in flavor text.
Whoever is in charger of that lacks on the side of localization correctly.
JPN and KR seems ok in the wording but English... urgh
I keep hoping that the Ryakgyr Peninsula gets explored at some point, because it feels like the closest geographic analog to a Korea equivalent given the areas we know around it? Also where we might be able to see more groups of Xaela? 🤞
😔 Well... damn. I guess we hold out hope for some sort of analogous area, because the lack of one when others are afforded a place says... quite a lot. 😬
honestly I would kill for more non-steppe Xaela. We have Sidurgu being the last of his clan, and the ones from the Alexander quest...who I think also all die iirc...
i just went Holy Shit looking at this LMFAO i didnt have any hopes of there being a korean inspired area in this game and i wasnt sure if i wanted one or not either bc it's such a coin toss up between the team being able to execute it well but im staring.. its on the mind now.
Honestly yeah, with the treatment Korean items alone get it doesn't inspire confidence, but I can hope that they'd do at least some measure of justice with a full story and zone. And if they never do? Free real estate for headcanons, people can make their own~ >:D
This being a Korea exclusive outfit then they do this I wish I was surprised but seems to be the case with the other “far eastern” stuff too particularly any Chinese inspired outfits as well 😔 the vague haha yea this is Japanese when it’s not is annoying
THAT'S WHAT IM FUCKING SAYIINNGGGGG LIKE BRO. like if you look at the Far Eastern Officer and Maiden's set which are also based off of hanbok, korean traditional wear, they just name the pieces generic. they couldn't have gone generic with this too??? did they run out of generic clothing terms???
like with the way they've set up the far eastern lands I'm resigned to everything thats East Asian but not Japanese just being called "far eastern" but this is really irking a part of my brain 😭😭😭

I sincerely thank you for speaking this out.
Good grief, not another of these *westerners being naive and disrespectful orientalists* moments in ffxiv😇
i wanted to share the good news that the moderators have seen the forum post and responded !
