2/5: the school was converted into prison S-21 over the 3-years of atrocities. 18,000 people were tortured to death here - men, women, children, Cambodians and foreigners. “Intellectuals”- teachers, doctors, students, artists and anyone wearing glasses was deemed to be one.

3/5: Even Pol Pot’s officials were not spared and only 1/3 of his cabinet were still alive at the end. Foreigners including tourists were randomly rounded up, interrogated, “confessions” extracted, tortured and executed - British, Kiwi, Indian, Pakistani, Thai, none were spared.

4/5: classrooms were converted into prison cells. Inside classrooms brick and wood holding cells were made. Barbed wire surrounded the balconies to prevent suicides. And it all overlooked a garden where kids exercise equipment was turned into torture instruments.

5/5: despite being in the middle of the city no one knew of the existence of the prison. When it was found a day after the regime fell only 4 children hiding in trash were alive. Hundreds of undestroyed docs and photos were found. I’ve been to Auschwitz and this is as bad. May it never happen again.
