If you haven't already, you could check out some of the short stories on the main MTG site for stories related various sets.

For the novels, you should just avoid the more recent MTG novels (War of the Spark: Ravnica, War of the Spark: Forsaken)
They're really infamous for really misrepresentation the characters, and for the sequel, bi-erasure. No one in the community like them.

Firebearers is finished, so probably that one if you want something more immediately available? It's a really good story, one of my favourites. God of Clay is the first one, then Forest Gods, and finishing with God of Fire.

It's set in a fantasy version of Africa during the desertification of the Sahara, but there's nature gods around. It's well worth the read!

Joaquín's Noss Saga is excellent too and probably the more queer one, but that's a work in progress still so you'd be waiting a bit longer for the rest of the story. If you do want to go for it though, they're available from multiple outlets or directly from Joaquín's website, he's cool that way.
