Ha ha, I never thought of it as a Gen X thing, being a late boomer myself! Did they still have the GE ads (with the elves sledding on electric razors) when you guys watched? I don't remember what year they stopped showing those. I still watch it every year, but without ads.

My niece was surprised my son (who grew up in Belgium in the 90's) hadn't seen The Sandlot. She asked why I hadn't shown it to him. I tried to explain to her that watching things on demand wasn't really a thing back then. Not sure she really gets it - it's hard for them to believe!

I remember none of the ads. I had to go to Wikipedia just now to see what had been cut or added to the special. Apparently some scenes were shortened in 1978 and not restored until 1998. I couldn't pick out what those were without being told.

I had the pleasure of reuniting voice-over actors Billie Mae Richards, Paul Soles, and Carl Banas for CBC radio back in 2007 to record the intro to a programme as Rudolph, Hermey, and Foreman Elf. It was an honour.

The original airing did not include Santa going to misfit Island to pick up the misfit toys.

There was an outcry after that so they changed the ending the following year to the way it is now.

Christmas isn’t for kids, I’ve come to believe. It’s for nostalgia. (And admittedly I’m sentimental by nature.) And for me, Christmas is forever about these shows and old ornaments and all the stuff of a fixed period of childhood.
