Ooh, ok interesting. And I think this explains some of why I don't get on with some of the more "cosy" novels - they have that exact feeling of careful engineering to keep the bad things away from the storyline.

I have a review in the March Locus of A Thousand Blues by Cheon Seon-ran in which I deliberately did not get into the "cosy" debate, but it's an interesting test case - I think more than not it manages to convey the importance of small local victories without being dishonest about larger trends.
Which is super rare - it's one of the fail points of L&L that it only works if you try not to e.g. think about "wait, the organised crime...". I would love if more books managed it, but it's why I find the books I reach to for comfort are outside of the cosy pile because they have honest stakes.
