Very nice! Good color match, too! Don't get me wrong, the other flies were pretty sweet, too.

Until I read a recent article about Cutcliffe, I had no idea where Tenkara tyers got that curled hackle. Now that I know that it’s regular chicken hackle that has been curled, my next question is why curl it? Does it serve some function that I’m not seeing?

It might add some action that would otherwise be missing from stiff hackles. But I mostly think its function is 'looking cool.' Which, when it comes down to it, is the primary function on many of the features we put on flies! They've got to catch anglers as well as fish.

Also the outward umbrella-shaped "curl" of hackles on sakasa kebari used in tenkara is a matter of feather selection and placement, not curling the fibers with a metal object as Cutcliffe does.
