I distinctly remember there was this golden light coming through one of the bridges during sunset one evening and thinking. ‘Damn... at the wrong angle and there's kinda a big lake between where I'd need to be.'

On my final visit to the Summer Palace in 2020, I started from the west gate and worked my way around to the south side of the lake. I honestly didn't expect to get this great of a photo. I was liking the golden light but I hadn't really looked at the sky.

I was actually trying to get this shot of planes landing to the west with the sunset behind them. I had seen them enough times to know that they came every 30ish minutes. With the sun rays coming over the mountains to the west of Beijing…

…and perfectly outlining the tower in the distance as well as one of the buildings on the lake edge... it felt like all my many walks around the entire city of Beijing had finally paid off. It was a parting gift from a city I loved dearly as I moved away. #我爱北京
