Same for his "claim" post. To me, the holy grail is where my programming FEELS totally unconstrained, YET Rust saved me from myself anyways.

How did you find out about rust 12 years ago? It was still a skunkworks Mozilla project at that point right? I had heard about Rust, but not by name. I had an acquaintance on the inside of Mozilla. He was talking about building a better PAWN (Small C) language, but spoke about rust for AMX Mod X.

I remember thinking, “Oh that’s pretty cool — another language. But we have, ASM, C, and C++; We have Java and PHP. It kinda feels like we can cover most of the world’s problems there.” Not having any idea about the memory safety part of it. But was that even apart of the language 12 years ago?

Was the borrow checker even there? Was lifetimes? 12 years ago I bet the language that drew you in is not actually the spec for spec language that we know as rust today. So — What made you want to use it, and how did you hear about it?

I would be curious to hear if you had some predictions/opinions about rust that didn't turn out how you thought they would. I always find that one of the biggest sources of learning, sometimes I'm convinced something will turn out a certain way and it doesn't because I underestimated a variable.

The old Monty Python joke comes to mind. People think learning Rust is hard today? Well, in our days, we had to walk to and from school in the snow, uphills both ways as we did not have NLL.

I think I started using rust back in my sophomore or freshman year in college, so about 9 years at this point. I’m so thankful for the work you and others had put in at that point, without it I have no idea what kind of programmer I’d be.
