Free speech means speaking truth to power. Shouting insults, racist ideas, inciting violence is NOT what free speech is about. Just as the 2nd amendment does NOT guarantee a gun for everyone. These amendments have been perverted by people who don't know what freedom means.
Just a thought... Schumer is still holding out for negotiations. Trump has shown that he is not a politician, but an egotistical narcissist and bully. He told Zelenskyy that he holds all the cards & mocked him along with other allies. How can your really think you can negotiate with man like this?!
Yes, but those consequences can't be enacted by our government, unless that speech is inciting lawless action, threats, harassment or defamation. We have the right to be hateful, but the constitution doesn't protect us from ensuing societal consequences.
The problem is that hate is subjective. That's why it shouldn't be regulated. I accept that even people with beliefs that I despise generally believe wholeheartedly that they're just as righteous as I believe I am.
Freedom of expression/speech is a fundamental right in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms but isn’t absolute in to protect the rights and freedoms of others. There’s provisions against hate speech, libel, incitement to violence. Promoting racism or anti-semitism isn’t ok.
The USA is one of the very few democratic countries that does not outlaw hate speech. Out of these countries, only 4 of those joined in fighting with the Allies during WW2. This is important because it is the allowance of such hate speech that allowed fascism to take root.
The Tolerance Paradox is also important to note, relating to my above statement. The USA does have Libel and Slander laws already in effect, among others, which means we don't actually have truly Free Speech in the USA anyway. Yet we still allow dangerous rhetoric to fuel the rise of extremism.
Mike Johnson (a.k.a., Moses) is living together with another man. Together, they think the separation of church and state is demonic! You can't make this shit up.. please repost! https://youtu.be/cfubBag5nWU
Actually… Free Speech is Free speech… if it crosses into a threat then that may be unlawful but even “ if I hate what you are saying, I would fight to the death your right to say it.”
Imagine a sign with a swastika on it. Pretty safe to say that's hate speech. But if the swastika is the S in "Musk", on a sign that says "F*ck Musk", is it anti-semitic hate speech, or am I making a statement about my hatred of Elon? Hate speech is subjective.
Here in Cda, a swastika by itself is not automatically considered hate speech unless there's some context, ie, if it is used in a way that promotes hatred, intimidates, or incites violence against an identifiable group. Those are reasonable conditions.
Right now, Mr Khalil is being accused of promoting hatred, intimidating Jewish students, and inciting violence for speaking out against Netanyahu and Israel. Being against the dominant ideology is now being called "hate speech", because it offends Trump.
I agree that the right is suddenly embracing the concept of hate laws to promote censorship. In this case, the lack of due process is the crux of the issue; any concerns about promoting harm could come out in court, but a closed-door partisan decision on acceptable views is unacceptable.
It is though. You don’t have to like it, but it’s not illegal to be an asshole. “I may disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death your right to say it.” ~Some smart person.
Hate speech actually is free speech and protected speech, no matter how offensive, unless imminent lawless action or actual threats, according to well established case law. However, it doesn’t mean it’s free from adverse consequences for people.
The fire example isn’t binding because it was dictum (a legal footnote not part of the opinion). It depends on the *circumstances.* Like if there is indeed a fire. They’re not going to arrest you if someone yells it, takes it as a joke, and nobody gets hurt. It’s the circumstances that matter.
While this is true, RetrumpliCONs truly never cared about 'Free Speech'. They simply want no consequences for the dumb, ignorant, and evil things they say out loud. And the rest of us have to ALWAYS show up with the consequences.
Actually, it is. So long as it is not accompanied by a physical threat or actual violence, Hate Speech is the quintessence of Free Speech. If we only protected speech everyone agrees with, you would have no freedom at all.

There are many things I disagree with, but since I am enabled by self-control, I don't do hateful free speech.
We should walk in kindness & love our neighbors.
That’s a sad day of entitlement.

This endless, repetitive spew of lies and disinformation is not 'free speech', its a method for programming the youth.
We must STOP it in its tracks.

Hateful speech says you are ugly, useless and stupid.
It is legal to say kill all Jews.
It is NOT legal to say kill that Jew.
