Started the season without a viable backup GK, only 3 CBs (1 of whom we knew wasn’t up to scratch), didn’t upgrade at 6, or buy a 1v1 winger. We did buy a 6 but he is an 18yo whom we refuse to play at 6 to get experience so we play him at RB and CB

and we extended a 32 year old defender a month ago for no reason whatsoever other than he’s the cheapest option rather than waiting until the end of season to see if his injuries would persist.

the philosophy is to always go the cheapest option, whether by leaving ourselves short or reinvesting in an older player (forster too), hope it works and be dumbfounded when it doesn’t.

I would have a problem if we extended Forster though. He’s on way too much for a backup GK who can’t play our style.

I don’t have a problem with that. Feels smart to keep a couple of experienced pros if they’re happy to be here and HG… means we only need 1 CB rather than 2 defenders.

Because he can start negotiating with other clubs from Wednesday. I presumed he would be going to the MLS tbh, so I’m surprised both parties agreed to extend.

What position do you put Davies if not CB? And Forster has absolutely been capable. This seems like a massive stretch.

Ben Davies is a left back playing CB for starters. And you might think he’s capable (I’d disagree after watching him kick the ball in his own net twice, a couple of feet in front of me last week), but he had his £75k contact extended last year and that’s not good value or planning.

Forster hasn’t cost Spurs a single point since he’s come in. The focus on errors in a game we won is more evidence of reaching.

And Davies has appeared as CB for Spurs far more than LB in recent years. The bad thing about Davies at the moment is that he’s injured.

Yeah and Davies ( a left back) forced to play CB for 3 years says more about the squad than anything really. Especially since we’re asking him to be backup CB and LB

And if you think having Forster as backup is good squad management then I don’t really know what to say to you.

I don’t know what you’d say either since Forster has been absolutely fine.

And if Davies weren’t injured at the moment we’d be in a lot better off.

I’m open to criticism of squad planning but these two points are weak arguments.

All I’ll say is that given our style of play we’re the most dependant side in the league on our keeper and CBs. Once they’re gone, we cant hold a higher line, or successfully build up. Everyone knew that drop off would be a problem before the season, and so it’s proved.
