this is something I've tried to articulate in the past, but couldn't quite find the words. It's why I would describe shows like Girl's Last Tour or games like Coquette Dragoon as "cozy", in spite (or actually because?) of their grim and hopeless settings.

Often times, to me at least, the more complicated the game the cozier it feels. VA-11 Hall-A is cozy. Disco Elysium is cozy. I imagine something like Factorio would be pretty cozy too. True coziness is about contrast - warm blankets in a blizzard, not a balmy day in paradise.
