Just made in different factories, possibly in different countries. No idea how modern manufacturing is so bad at measuring though. I get it with shoes, trousers, hats.

I’m told that there’s a tolerance of up to 1cm on each seam. So one pair of trousers can have a seam that is -1cm on each side and the next pair +1cm on each side. Then you have roughly a 2” difference in width on trousers of the same size

wont buy clothes online for this reason, just a total lottery.
It's hardly the biggest problem in the world, but 21st century manufacturing should surely be able to fix it.
Also, got me maths wrong. Across four seams it’s nearer four inches difference
