Most people want to think that the country they live in is (or can one day be) a place to be proud of. It's in your interest to promote a civic faith that encourages that. Not least because it provides a basis for collective action.

gonna weigh in on this discourse: what frustrates me is both the historical revisionism about wwii, but even more deeply the idea that when someone says "that's un-american" they're making some kind of universally quantified historical claim. no they aren't you pedantic prick
