Where Theoden was willing to hear the council of others, even if for a time that was through Wormtongue... Denethor only trusted in his own council and what he saw on social media, er, his Palantir.
Here's a character very intentionally trying to use his words to give someone else a particular variety of brainworm that makes you an apathetic doomer and then Gandalf comes along with (one of my favorite lines from all the novels)
Actual line:
"Not all is dark. Take courage; for better help you will not find. No counsel have I to give to those that despair. Yet counsel I could give, and words I could speak to you. Will you hear them?"
