I think there's weird dynamics based on links to university disciplines, and the prior experiences, too.

For example, Geographers tend to have a huge range of A level/uni specialisations, plenty of fieldtrip or gap year experience, and so generally reasonably happy and get on with each other.

There are other Departments or Faculties where they are loosely assembled, but actually want to be in their own specialisms or want students opting for them - so I think sometimes 'humanities' can be tribal!

But presumably you guys have the actual data to share, right? What does it say?

I haven’t looked yet, but I would guess KS1/EYFS would be close. I have always worked in schools with very close knit hums departments (they always had the best dpt lunches/nights out!) and PE…well, I have lots of thoughts on PE @katstern4.bsky.social 😝

It’s intense. You team teach so often, your lessons are in plain sight so your team can always see what you are doing, lots of after-hours sessions, fixtures, trips etc. Also a ‘sports culture’ so a lot of emphasis on team values.

Exactly! But also - you really heavily rely on each other for all the above reasons, so there is also a massive expectation to pull your weight and when you don't it's really public and obvious. So, in short - PE is a tough subject where relationships can be really tight but also fraught!

Very fair. One of the areas that matters is cover - a lot of depts cover internally, so any illness/absence can dramatically increase workload. Classes of 60 kids 👧 on a regular basis can strain relationships.
