Ok does this sound familiar... in 1998 just after winning an election with a huge majority Labour produced a Green Paper on welfare reform. Tony Blair tasked its author Frank Field with "thinking the unthinkable" and abandoning some of the founding principles of the welfare state... 🧵

The '98 Green Paper said "The Govt's aim is to rebuild the welfare state around work" and it contained proposals to cut incapacity benefit, distinguishing between "genuine" and "non-genuine" claimants...
