I got Apple vibes off the Wii back then too. White plastic, blue lights and glass buttons. I'm not sure this is a new direction. Just updated after... crums... over 18 years.

I'm more than happy for their innovation to lie in the games than in gimmicky hardware. You can always slap a silly peripheral onto it if need be. But the primary revenue comes from universal appeal and attracting third parties with a large install base. You get there by optimizing to needs.

Like I said, I want to avoid any judgemental opinions because I know what I have is purely a subjective gutfeeling thing without reason. So this was not really about any business strategies, appeal and whatnot.

But Nintendo's change is very noticeable. You had a whole different vibe even with their most straightforward hardware like the GameCube (I know, different times, apples and oranges)
