If you are lucky enough to HAVE a family GP, it often takes 3-12 weeks just to get an appointment. That’s cruelty.

Been waiting 2.5 years for a Dr. Our city of 48,000 has one walk in clinic with one doctor. If you are not in line outside by 7:30 am for the 9:00 am opening you may not get in. So if I need a doctor after 12 pm on any day of the week my only option is emerg.

I think I can go to the local Walmart and see an RN for a fee. They apparently can set up a virtual appt. with a doctor. Not sure who pays for that. Walmart medicine.

Thank you. We need to be aware that this is not just a “rural” problem. Some journalist should do a deep dive into the situation in smaller Ontario/Canadian cities. The problem is far worse than people think.

Because even if you have access to a family doctor it can take weeks to get an appointment and that is often unacceptable. So you make your appointment, go to emergency for care and see your doctor for follow up weeks later. Otherwise you wait weeks and THEN get sent for tests!

The admin staff at my GP’s office regularly. Tell patients to go to emergency for routine things like antibiotics because Doctor is not available due to working part time. I often wonder if this is a strategy by doctors to put pressure on government.

It’s bizarre to me that our ERs aren’t split into urgent and non-urgent care facilities. Dedicate resources to urgent, get beds and appropriate LTC facilities not built in the 50’s and 60’s to free bed blockers.

When I hear these stats I often wonder about this scenario. It's after hours or you can't get an appointment or advice. At this point, you an untrained layman are asked to do an assessment, of course you would err on the side of caution.
I know of solutions but they appear to be inconsistent

my last family Dr (after 15 years without) worked 4 days a week 6 hours a day. Didn't once manage to have a semi-urgent issue in that window. Care provided when i could access was worse than from random walk-in clinics

I am so fortunate. I just looked and I can book a non-emergency appointment with my dr this Saturday. (2 days). An emergency, I can probably book this pm with a dr in his clinic. The longest I’ve had to wait non-emerg was 2 weeks during pandemic

My family doctor required me to sign a document that forces me to go to an ER if I can't see her. If I got to a walk-in clinic, she will drop me as a patient. I'm in Ontario.

Our NDP Govt in BC set up Urgent and Primary Care offices that are open during evenings and weekends for non life threatening emergencies. Plus the Nurse line which can lead to a Dr on the line. Ways to save trips to Emergency.
