I grew up in the country, and we used to tap our trees - enough for us. For the first while, we’d boil it down in huge pots on the stove in the kitchen. Our neighbour was a farmer, so he took it over and used an outdoor shack with wood fire and we got 4L. The rest was his to sell or give away. :)

That's b/c we send the lion's share of our oil south to be processed by US refineries owned by the big O&G giants.
Only 1 new onwe built in Canada in over 30 yrs only handles tar sands sludge, can't make diesel fuel, nor gas. Why? b/c it keeps $$ in Big O&G pockets to Not build more. Corporate Greed
