Discussing Ofsted's response to the death of headteacher Ruth Perry, Oliver says that giving schools more time to respond to safeguarding issues is a "wise decision".

There has been only one incident since September where Ofsted has paused an inspection over safeguarding.

Oliver adds that every inspector has now gone through mental health training & he "wouldn't allow" any inspectors to start without doing so.

Oliver says many people involved in independent complaints panels are "quite taken back by the sheer level of detail" that goes into checking consistency in complaints.

He adds that Ofsted is looking at "signposting where leaders can get support" in the future.

Oliver defends the inspector who inspected Ruth Perry's school, Caversham Primary.

They carried out the inspection as per the framework, Oliver said - "it's Ofsted's responsibility, not the responsibility of that individual".

Pushed on culture change within Ofsted, Oliver again defends inspectors, saying he is "absolutely confident" in Ofsted's inspecting workforce.

He adds that there is still significant interest in inspector roles, with around 1000-1500 requesting to inspect in Nov/Dec.
