I agree. I took a women’s sexuality class there in 1980. And they got rid of my econ department as well, which the only time in my subsequent 25 years as an economist that I was encouraged to be myself. Such a sad day for a wonderful place.

These attacks on WGS as a discipline are in part institutions saying that they don’t care if *cis women* are properly served by nurses and doctors and social workers, in addition to expressing a total disregard for trans people

Without knowing too much about UCSC, it's my understanding that faculty made a decision to disband the department. That is heartbreaking, but (as someone in a similar kind of feminist studies department) I can understand it happening. I hope the students are taken care of and find a place to land.

Yeah, I would say the UCSC situation is very different (if equally devastating). But the endemic under-resourcing of WGS departments across the field contributes to both individual departments imploding, and administrations treating our programs as expendable when budget cuts come calling.
