(On a closer reading of the lore, the Old Dragonslayer actually appears to be Ornstein's empty armour, animated by means that have not been conclusively established, but when you encounter it it fights mostly like Ornstein and it's full-body-concealing anyway so it functionally is him)

In the first game, you go to the kingdom of Oolacile directly after its fall. But to do so, you meet Dusk, the young (~twenty-five-ish) princess of Oolacile, who has been held in temporal stasis since the kingdom fell, and she establishes that she is from "an age long before thine".

Oddly enough, once you do the maths, it's actually a relatively short time period for DARK SOULS — Oolacile fell only three or four centuries before your subjective "present day". But that means you went back in time three or four hundred years. And it's never really remarked upon

The example that inspired this thread is the Dragonslayer Armor.

The Dragonslayer Armor is the armour worn by Dragon Slayer Ornstein, who theoretically you fight as part of the Ornstein & Smough boss battle in the first game.

Ornstein himself actually having been present at that battle is not known with certainty, for lore reasons (it's suggested Ornstein left Anor Londo at some point, which is not compatible with you killing him there, and his liege lady is absolutely up to creating combat-capable illusions)

But his Armor is almost certainly present and involved in the fight, whether it's him wearing it or the armour itself essentially becoming a warrior golem at Gwyndolin's command.

Fast forward to DARK SOULS II. If you want to join the Blue Sentinels — the covenant whose members can be summoned for help against PvP invaders — you have to go through the Cathedral of Blue at Heide's Tower. The Old Dragonslayer attacks you the moment you walk in the front door.
