Yeah it was and that's quite impressive for a team without a recognised out and out 9 that could turn a point into a win and a defeat into a point which has stopped them crossing the finish line. Getting a loan deal for a Victor Osimhen last summer would have put them top of the league by now.

Does it matter who is scoring the goals? There's a risk that having a more one dimensional striker like Osimhen that the team as a whole scores fewer goals while he scores more as an individual than others.

This Arsenal regression was foreseeable and is entirely tied in with decisions the manager has made with impunity. Much closer to the decisions Houllier or Benitez made around transfers/style that led to drop offs, and without cups in the bank to compensate.

It’s obviously a talent problem - talent were missing and talent we don’t have.

But….the system is visibly stifling players too. Quest for control is proving self defeating. Look how quickly Utd were able to move up the field even with 10 men.

He needs to unshackle the players a bit.

While some observations may be reasonable in isolation the reality is (a reality which too many supporters AND writers don’t want to confront because it’s too simple, and simplicity is an enemy of narrative) is that the injuries are probably 90% of everything. That’s it.

Injuries are pure luck. Our most injury prone players are Partey and Zinchenko/Tomiyasu so we signed backups. Partey stayed fit for the longest period ever, and players who literally haven’t missed more than a game before (White, Saka, Odegaard) all got long term injuries. You can’t predict that.

Chickens and eggs. I think you might be able to ask questions about Calafiori and in the wake of Jesus’ World Cup injury. But much of the injury pain this year has been bad luck to players who have previously been durable.

I think in the wake of the Bournemouth game there was a stat that we haven’t played a league game without both Saka and Odegaard not starting since Odegaard joined permanently. That right hand triangle (them two + White) have been key to our attack and they played 4 league games together.

hmmm... I think it is a touch more nuanced, given they did score 91 in the league last season, to be fair. I think he made a summer calculation that has backfired - but they may sign now

91! I'm amazed at that. For sure it's more nuanced but if I was an arsenal fan looking at that team sheet and the league table I'd be annoyed if he doesn't sign a no 9 in either windows. ps has anyone looked at the time it takes for the set pieces and how long arsenal take its frustrating!
